HP is over rated and has too much crapware installed. I have one of each and the asus>>>the HP.

It depends on what you need it for. The 2nd laptop is in a higher tier (newer processor) than the 1st or 3rd. If money isn't an issue then I'd go with the $799 HP. If you're going to be gaming on the side as well as use it for work/school then I wouldn't go with any of those 3...

Dealing with HP Customer Service was such a nightmare for me that I sent them a letter wishing them bodily harm.

That aside my HP laptop was decent, I now own an Asus and it has treated me well.

Every HP I have ever owned (4 of them) have all overheated and burned through more HDDs than Andy fluff does vibrator batteries

I guess I should add that my HP did catch on fire once.

I bought this a couple months ago and I'm happy with it. Keep in mind we use it as the 'family computer', in other words the hp's are good desktop replacements - they don't excel in any one area, but don't have any glaring weaknesses. You won't be able to play the newest games in high resolutions, but it's good for everyday tasks and great if you watch a lot of tv/movies. The battery life and cooling are much improved from the dv7's a couple years ago.

I just left best buy checked out the HP that was 15.6 Inchs was nice think ill get it lol

Easy choice, the 3rd 17 inch one. Cheaper than 1st, doesnt have integrated graphics, and more ram and bigger battery than the second. Also the biggest screen.

If you get HP, you may as well buy an extra copy of whatever OS is on it. Because you'll be uninstalling crap and wishing you'd just wiped it and started over everytime you reboot.

Preinstalled OSes always come with crap, i think he will be fine uninstalling unwanted software.

decraplifier is good on removing all/most trial softwares.

There are too many options to say one is better than another.

stay away from refurb. its cheaper because it was broken once before not worth the risk of it being a lemon.

i would go for the second one because its got the new architecture ivy bridge chips vs the asus that has last gen sandy bridge. clock for clock the new ivys are faster meaning that HP is faster then the asus. the only downside is if they are anything like the desktop processors they run decent amount hotter. the ivy processor is going to have better graphics also.

also im pretty sure he said he was going to run linux so i doubt the bloatware that comes on it will matter once he changes OS.

im not running linux on this one, i run linux on the one i have now =p

i need one with windows for school will just make it more universal so i wont have any issues with stuff =]

but i do thank everyone for there inputs ill prob be picking up the hp 15.4 offline checked it out in the store its great...i buy it online i get a year of anti virus for free. =] hey any anti is better then none, not use to actually having to use antivirus though.

If it's anything like my pavilion, you'll be happy by and large.

Mine won't play 1080p videos, but that's okay.
