With today being a day to remember all those who have served in the armed forces, I thought it would be nice to get a thread going to remember some of them.

I'm remembering my grandfather, who flew in a Halifax (and later Lancaster) bomber during WWII. He lied about his age to join the RCAF, because he felt that if he didn't apply he would be drafted and he told me, "I didn't want to have to walk and I didn't want to drown, so I joined the air force." He's no longer with us today, but his memory lives on through all of his family who will never forget him.

That's his plane (Lancaster) -- the nose art is currently hanging in the Canadian War Museum (or at least it was last time I was there).

Who are you remembering today?

My grandfather who fought in WW2. Even though I know it is more for our veterans and current military forces, I am also thinking about my mom, who passed away 2 months ago yesterday. She ALWAYS made she we remember our grandfather at this time.

My grandfather was a Marine in the Pacific theater in WWII. He was a BAR man anf fought in the infamous 1st Marine Division.

He was lucky through all the island campaigns until Iwo Jima, where he was shot twice and hit with shrapnel as well. He was transferred back to the states and was in rehab the rest of the war. He survived and recovered nicely, and raised a solid family in Cramerton NC. He passed away when i was in 6th grade. I remember for a 5th grade school project we were told to interview one of our grandparents, and i decided to interview and record him, and i still have that tape to this day.

He is one of many military personnel in my family, but today i especially remember him.

I dont have anyone specific in mind. Today I focus on all Canadian military personnel past and present. Without these courageous people I would not be sitting at my comfy little desk in my workplace making good money to sit and read these boards.

While sometimes I get caught up in the anti-war sentiments, I always try to remember one thing. Whether or not I agree with the cause, I do agree with the troops. They are willing to die for MY country. They've got the stones that I lack. Props to them.

my great grandfather who fought in world war one and trained soldiers for wwii as a colonel (in montreal, i believe). he was ninety six (?) when he passed away, I would have been nine or ten, and remember well speaking with him. a great man, and we should all be so lucky.

My grandmother was a part of the Polish aristocracy when Russia and Germany split the country between them. She was 13 at the time and smuggled weapons from the Russian part of the country to the German part.

She was caught and wound up in a Siberian POW camp. Her story keeps going from there, but it's too long to share it here. Absolutely amazing the burdens the people of that time lived through. One of the strongest people I ever knew.
