We decide who stays here and who doesn't. The UN can house him on their soil if they want him protected so badly (aka Antartica).

have to get tortured before you can complain about it, otherwise it didn't happen.

How did he get here in the first place? Using our ridiculously lax refugee laws? :p

slipped in somehow, via the many methods people use to slip in.
Fake passport or whatever else.

Once they are here they just claim refugee status, and then it gets processed.

In this case the result of the process was deportation. This dude then kept appealing the decision (and losing) until all avenues of appeal were exhausted. That is where we stand now, with the UN sticking their beak in.

probably best to remember that your government values human life and justice more than he did.

I have determined that he would face torture and i am all for it. Its time we stop coddling people and get down to business. You run with a rough crowd, you get treated rough. I am all for it. God knows every time the US people get taken prisoner they get tortured. Why are the good guys (and i loosely include Canada as a good guy), the only ones who have to play by the rules?

and one day you'll wake up and realize that you're playing by their rules and find a toilet to puke in.

The reason he's been here for so long is that Rwanda had the death penalty for war criminals up until 2007. Deportation would've been out of the question until then. Since then, a 4 year process of appeals and appeals on a deportation order doesn't seem completely inconsistent.

DH: To quote a famous work...

"What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil? ... And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned round on you – where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's, and if you cut them down -- and you're just the man to do it -- do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!"

If we get Mexico onboard then I think this could be a North American shared belief: the UN shouldn't be interfering with our individual countries.

the UN doesn't have the authority to stop an individual deportation anyway.
They are within their rights to comment and voice opinion on it. Canada is within its right to ignore what the UN has to say on the matter. The general assembly can hold a vote and opt to condemn Canada for doing it but that's probably as far as it would go.

The UN doesn't actually interfere with any country in North America beyond the individual countries willingness to agree with the UN's suggestions/resolutions. There is no such thing as "world law" anyway. There are just agreements that various countries agreed upon (which could just as easily be done without the UN).
Just like "UN trade sanctions" against IRAN are only followed by countries who agree to abide by it.

The Canadian government has probably agreed to cooperate with the UN, at nominally because of other issues that could come up if they ignored them. Ultimately I'm pretty sure the guy will be deported. It might just not be back to Rwanda.

Deport him to Mexico. He could do great work down there. The drug cartels could use him for target practice.

Canada decided to ignore the UN's request and deport him anyway.

So it was a good news story in the end.
