Inspired by martian, here is a new math puzzle (not from facebook). I used his same numbers and added a new one at the bottom to make sure we had all of the numbers. You can give the answer, but if you figure it out, give it a day or two before posting the solution.

8709 = 6
7112 = 2
1172 = 2
6666 = 6
1711 = 1
3213 = 9
7662 = 3
9312 = 6
0000 = 0
2222 = 8
3333 = 3
5555 = 2
8193 = 3
8098 = 7
7777 = 1
9999 = 9
7756 = 7
6855 = 6
9881 = 8
5531 = 5
4387 = 4
2581 = ?

Should 7777 = 1 instead?

no, 7777 is 0

2581 = 7

Detmer is correct. Thanks, I changed it in the original post.

Btw I still think something is a little off, but I'm too lazy to do all of the numbers. :P I did the top 3 and solved it.

tertius you're supposed to make it "outside the box"

that means do something that'll break a person's concentration on numberical patterns.

martian's was outside the box. I'm sorry this was too easy for you. Your turn to create a challenge =P

tduong, is yours just some random combination of mathematical operators or is there more to it?

@martian: yeah, that type of pattern is used in numerology though they have some strange rules about not reducing certain numbers which are important (perhaps dealing with the 12 months as compared to base 10 numbers).

I spent about 12 minutes looking at tduong's while waiting for food and didn't get it.

Detmer, yours depends on order? gross.

lol i'll give you a hint. It is nothing out of the box. The order at which i decide to add or divide is random. However, the pattern is exactly the same on all. Like i said, to make it hard, you gotta break the concentration on patterns. Even if it is a pattern.

So you're saying it is random but there is a pattern? Do you mean there is a rule to determine the order of operations but it does not result in the same order for each one?

As for mine, it requires thinking outside the box I suppose... I think that when you know the answer you will love it or hate it...
